Edited by Maggie Sokolik Composition in networked and online environments offers more than just a way to integrate computers and writing. This union is forcing us to re-examine our ideas of what constitutes writing and reading. We are also forced to look at our rhetorics, literacy practices, and the impact of technology on everyday life. We draw your attention to a wonderful new site: Einstein's Dreams. This site offers an exciting visual representation of the stories in Alan Lightman's novel of the same name. Our current feature departs slightly from the focus on computers and looks to the past--to the writing of William Clark, of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. "'we commenced wrighting &c.' A Salute to the Ingenious Spelling and Grammar of William Clark," by Robert B. Betts, is an amusing look at writing practices of one of America's most notable explorers. This article was first published in the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation's journal, We Proceeded On. Our thanks to Ludd Trozpek for allowing us to reprint this article here. A new review of the Oxford Shorter English Dictionary was added in March. We also feature Mark Bernstein's hypertext essay, "Chasing Our Tails"/Chasing Our Tales." Mark Bernstein is Chief Scientist with Eastgate, and was one of the creators of Storyspace, a hypertext authoring system. In the near future, reviews of CommonSpace, Daedalus, and selected OWLs, MOOs and MUDs will be published. Composition-related ideas that do not fit the mold of "review" will also be considered. Those interested in reviewing for this section should consult the Contributors Guidelines, and submit a review request. Reviewers will be asked to retain a copy of the relevant publication upon completing their review. We regret that no other form of remuneration can be offered.
